Geography and history

The Capricorn region is the economically most powerful region in the Limpopo Province in South Africa. The name of this region derives from the geographical line that crosses through it. The rapidly growing city of Polokwane is found at the centre of this region and therefore acts as the perfect base for tourists to explore the rest of the province.

Just outside Polokwane is the Bakone Malapa Open-air Museum and is a must-see for tourists visiting this region because it is a living exhibition of local African Culture. Polokwane is also perfect for history enthusiasts. The Civic Square and Photographic Museum together with many museums in this town, makes for an educational trip.

Approximately 15 km from Mokopane, the 3.3 million year old Makapans Valley is waiting for you to be explored. Whilst in Mokopane, you can visit the Game Breeding Centre and experience the brilliant wildlife that this region has to offer. The magnificent mountains and forests of the Magoebaskloof is situated in the west of this region and definitely a must-see for nature lovers.
