Geography and history

The Vhembe region’s western section is totally dominated by the rocky spine of the majestic Soutpansberg. This area of the region is a fertile, well-watered plateau that supports a wide variety of crops and cultivated lands. The Vhembe region’s rustic beauty can be ascribed to traditional African cultures that thrive in the swelter of valley bushveld and forests and also a wealth of legends.

The best way to explore the Soutpansberg Mountains is by hiking the Hangklip Trail. A rough road will lead the adventurous tourist to the largest Baobab in the country – its measurements to date states that it has a girth of 43 metres.

For the outdoor lovers who love a good hike or bike trail, the unusual and various activities in the Thohoyandou area will definitely not disappoint. The history enthusiasts will enjoy learning more about the VhaVenda culture.
