Tzaneen
Geography and history
Tzaneen is located in the Mopani Region of the Limpopo Province in South Africa. This town also includes the following areas – Modjadjikloof, Ofcolaco, Leydsdorp, Letsitele and Gravelotte.
Tzaneen is Limpopo’s second biggest town after Polokwane and has a population of approximately 30 000. Where exactly the town’s name derives from is unclear, but some theories state that it derives from the Sotho words ‘tsaneng’, meaning gathering place, and ‘tsana’, meaning basket of hills.
The well-known Kruger National Park is located approximately 100 km from Tzaneen. The Vervet Monkey Foundation is situated just outside the town and it cares for over 600 vervet monkeys.
