Louis Trichardt
General Information
Louis Trichardt is situated in the Vhembe region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa. The town once attracted ivory hunters and traders, as well as gunrunners and is also known as Makhado. This is after Chief Makhado of the Venda tribes, who overran the town. This historical story is retold in exhibits at the open-air Schoemansdal Museum.
Other activities and attractions in the area include San rock art, Voortrekker heritage sites, the Manavhela Ben Lavin Nature Reserve and the Albasini Dam. The dam offers water sports and other recreational activities. Travelling approximately 35Km south of Louis Trichardt along the N1 there is a sign indicating the Tropic of Capricorn.
Louis Trichardt, is located at the base of the Soutpansberg Range. This is a popular visiting spot as the views are spectacular. The area is filled with bananas and litchi growing.
The N1 running through the town will take you, after about an hours drive, to the Zimbabwean border.
There are a variety of accommodation options available in Louis Trichardt from Bed and Breakfasts, guest houses to self-catering units. There are also camping and caravaning facilities. The streets are lined with many restaurants pubs, coffee shops and even tea estates.
